  • Long runs/projectors: use HDBaseT over Cat cable or fiber—not a cheap HDMI cord.

Whole-Home Audio

  • Speakers: 14/2 to most rooms, 12/2 for long/high-output runs.

  • Outdoor: burial-rated wire to landscape speakers and sub; keep junctions above grade.

  • Control: app-only is fine; add keypad wire (22/4) if you want wall controls later.

Home Theater / Media Room

  • Speakers: LCR at the screen, surrounds at ear height, Atmos in-ceiling.

  • Subs: pre-wire two+ locations lets us place for smooth bass.

  • Video: HDBaseT or fiber for long throws to a projector.

Security & Door Entry

  • Cameras: Ethernet (PoE) to each location—more reliable than battery cams.

  • Doorbell: run both doorbell power and Ethernet so you can choose standard or PoE models.

  • Windows: low-voltage power/data to the window groups you’ll automate.

  • Scenes: wire for a simple keypad in kitchen/living (“All Off,” “Movie,” “Goodnight”).

    • If walls are open, choose Cat6A. Labor is the big cost; the cable bump is cheap insurance.

  • Speaker wire

    • 14/2 most rooms, 12/2 for long/high output, 14/4 when one box has to serve two speakers or you might bi-amp later.

  • Coax (RG6)

    • Still useful for over-the-air antenna or as a utility line. Costs little. Keep it.

  • Control/Sensor

    • 22/2 or 22/4 for keypads, sensors, triggers. Choose shielded if cables must run alongside electrical.

  • Fiber (optional)

    • Great as a backbone between floors or to the rack if you want “never repull” headroom.

  1. Home-run everything to a central rack closet (ventilated).

  2. Conduit everywhere you might upgrade (all TVs, hard-to-reach spots).

  • Use surface raceways or small surgical cuts.
