WiFi
Understanding How it All Works
Having a robust WiFi connection in every room is necessary for every home today. Today’s average home has a growing accumulation of connected devices all requiring a fast reliable wireless connection to function at their full potential. The great thing is, Internet speeds and WiFi have both improved significantly over the last few years. Data speeds are faster and wireless connections are more reliable than ever. However, WiFi is not without issue.
Despite faster speeds reaching most homes, wireless and sometimes wired networks can get bogged down. Most of us understand the frustration that comes with slow or unreliable Internet. Especially, when you have no idea what is causing it. The truth is, WiFi should be fast, simple, and most of all, reliable. Knowing what is happening on your home network is the most important aspect of keeping your home connected seamlessly. Things like connection quality, and signal strength are two factors that can have an impact on both speed and performance.
Home networks have evolved to become the most important electronics in the home…
Understanding How it All Works
WiFi stand for Wireless Fidelity, also known as WLAN (wireless local area network). WiFi works off the same principal as other wireless devices each using radio frequencies to send signals between devices. In short, modern WiFi uses two frequencies to transmit data: 5 GHz waves (the new 802.11ac standard) that are able to transmit more data, but are limited to shorter distances; and 2.4 GHz waves (the older 802.11n standard) that transmit less data but are able to travel farther distances.
The relationship between WiFi signal strength and speed at which data can be transferred over that signal is something that needs to be understood when it comes to WiFi performance. The performance of a WiFi connection depends greatly on radio signal strength. Many factors can impact signal strength like neighboring WiFi networks; even furniture can get in how well your WiFi performs. The truth is, in order to take advantage of 5GHz speeds; you need multiple access points, devices that broadcast WiFi distributed throughout your home, so you are always close to one.
Remember, Distance Weakens A WiFi Signal…
Internet Speed: Requirements for Video Streaming
Netflix:
- 1 Mb/s for viewing on a laptop computer. While you can stream Netflix at speeds of 1 Mb/s, the quality will be grainy on a large screen, much like watching an old VHS movie
- 2 Mb/s for viewing standard definition video (480p) on a TV
- 4 Mb/s for viewing high-def video (720p, 1080p)
- 5 Mb/s or more for the best audio and video experience
- 15 Mb/s for 4K streaming (but 25mb/s is preferred). Also recommended is a 4K Ultra TV with a HEVC decoder
Vudu:
- 0-2.3 Mb/sfor standard definition video
- 3-4.5 Mb/sfor 720p, high-def video
- 5-9 Mb/sfor full high definition 1080p resolution video and high definition audio
- 9 Mb/s or morefor 3-D HD movies
- 11 Mb/s or more for 4K streaming with access to Dolby Vision HDR
Hulu & Hulu Plus:
- 1.5 Mb/s to stream standard definition content
- 3 Mb/s for 720p high-def videos
- 6 Mb/s to stream 1080p HD content
- 13 Mb/s for 4K Ultra HD videos
Things that Affect Home Network Speed
Internet speed has an impact so it is important to understand what your service provider offers. Speeds can range from 20Mbps to 1000Mbps depending on where you live and what is offered. Other things that have an impact on your network speed include the age of your router or modem. If you have old or outdated equipment, it is highly likely you cannot even utilize all the bandwidth your service provider has given you.
Additionally, network bandwidth is shared between every other device on your network. Say you have a 20Mbps Internet speed and four other devices, like an Amazon Echo, Nest, Sonos, and Apple TV. If every one of the devices are using Internet at once, each of them can them can only download at 5Mbps, which is hardly enough when you consider that Apple TV alone needs at least 8Mbps.
So, what is the answer?
